Captern privacy policy
Last updated October 28, 2026. This policy covers the Android app Captern: Auto Captions (com.tinyfair.captern) published by Tinyfair on Google Play.
The short version
The app works on your phone. We do not have accounts or servers, your videos and their audio never leave your phone, the app has no camera, microphone, location, contacts or media permission, and we never receive your captions or personal details. Data leaves your phone only for ads, purchases and crash reports (Google), for the speech model download (Hugging Face), and for a small settings file the app downloads from our website, as described below.
Data that stays on your phone
- Videos you pick
- You choose a video with the Android photo picker, so the app has no access to your other photos or videos. Captern reads its audio on your phone to recognize speech and keeps a working copy in the app's private storage for your project. Videos and audio are never uploaded, never sent to us and never passed to the ad SDK.
- Captions and projects
- Your caption text, styles and project settings are saved only in the app's private storage on your phone. Delete a project in the app to remove it.
- Saved videos and .srt files
- Created only when you tap Save. Videos go to Movies/Captern and .srt files to Download/Captern on your phone. Where you share them next is up to you.
- Speech models
- The first time you make captions, the app downloads a speech model file (whisper.cpp, MIT license) from huggingface.co. The request contains no personal data, no video and no identifier; Hugging Face sees your IP address like any web server.
- Trial reminder
- If you start a free trial, one reminder 2 days before it ends is scheduled on your phone by Android. Nothing about it leaves your phone.
- Purchases
- Handled by Google Play; we never see your payment details.
Settings file from tinyfair.my.id
When it starts, the app downloads a small settings file from https://tinyfair.my.id/config/captern.json (the minimum app version and how often ads may appear). The request sends no personal data, no video data and no identifier. Like any web request, our web host sees your IP address in its standard server logs; we do not use it to identify you or link it to anything else.
Ads (Google AdMob)
The free version shows a small banner on the home screen and in Settings only. There are no ads while captions are written, in the editor, while a video is saved, on the Pro screen, and no ad when you open the app. A full-screen ad may appear after a captioned video is saved. It never appears in your first session in the app, at most once every 3 minutes and at most 6 times a day. You can also choose to watch 2 short videos for 24 hours of Pro. Ad content is limited to no higher than the PG rating, and dating, social casino and similar ads are blocked. To show and measure ads, Google may collect your device's advertising ID, an approximate location from your IP address, information about ad interactions, and diagnostics. Your videos and captions are never passed to the ad SDK. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland the app asks for your consent first, and you can change it later under Settings, Privacy choices. You can reset or delete your advertising ID in your Android settings. See how Google uses information from apps that use its services. Pro removes all ads.
Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)
If the app crashes or hits a serious error, it sends a crash report to Firebase Crashlytics, a Google service that helps us find and fix the bug. A report contains the error and where it happened in the code, the app version, the device model, the Android version, and a random installation ID that is not linked to you, your Google account or your advertising ID. It never contains your videos, their audio, your captions or anything that identifies you. Reports are kept for 90 days. See Firebase privacy and security.
Purchases (Google Play)
Pro is sold through Google Play Billing as a yearly subscription (with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers), a monthly subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel them in Google Play. We do not see your payment details; Google Play tells the app only whether Pro is active.
Permissions
Notifications, asked only when you start a free trial, for one reminder 2 days before it ends. Start at boot, so that reminder is set again after a restart. No camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos and media, storage, exact alarm or foreground service permission; videos are chosen with the Android photo picker. Google's ad and purchase libraries add the advertising ID, network state and billing permissions. Internet is used for ads, purchases, crash reports, the speech model download and the settings file described above.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices and deleting data
Everything Captern stores is on your phone. To delete your projects and captions, delete them in the app, uninstall the app or clear its storage in Android settings (Apps, Captern, Storage). Videos and .srt files you saved stay in Movies/Captern and Download/Captern until you delete them. For ad data, use your Android advertising ID settings or Settings, Privacy choices in the app. Questions: support@tinyfair.my.id.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date. Questions: support@tinyfair.my.id.
